This site features an architect-created green house plan that was designed from the ground up to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
The inspiration for the plan came from a growing awareness that new houses were getting bigger and bigger but with little redeeming design merit. The problem is that comfort has almost nothing to do with how big a space is. It is attained, rather, by tailoring our houses to fit the way we really live, and to the scale and proportions of our human form.

I was always cold . We used the money we saved on rent from living in the tent to buy an old motor-home. I beleive it was 24 ft, not very large. WE LOVED IT!! We worked out our way of life to perfection, I even learned to sew standing up since there wasn't anywhere to set up my sewing table and sit. Again , we only lived in it for a view months, about 6 atcually. We eventually bought a house. IN order to justify the purchase (and makes me feel less guilty), we bought an old fixer upper that needed perserving. At present, we are working on the whole urban homestead 'thing' but I really wish we had a bus or yurt or something else. Now we have 2 kids so we have to take them in to consideration. Has anyone else ever 'given in' and felt like crap about it?

There's something about the geometry that makes the thing look lopsided even tho it's not. It's also incredibly resistant to bending; not sure if that's good or bad, but thought this would be a heckuva base for a treeless 'treehouse' of some kind. Anyone know more about this kind of triangular tower?

My college education is in art and design as well, so my work quality is has a strict attention to detail and aesthetics.

I have always worked with an eye toward recycling and utilized green methods, (when possible), in doing any project. I have a keen interest in the permaculture concepts and lifestyle, have read the manuals, visited the center in Australia, and taken courses in rammed earth/adobe construction.

My dream in life is to find a way to make a decent living utilizing my natural talents, but in a way that is even more wholistic and true to permaculture.

But if after the inspection tommorrow, if it makes more sense to offer less and just tear the house down and build a new one, what would be the cheapest most efficient alternative housing to build? I keep looking at the shipping containers and steel housing. Hopefully the house can be fixed though. The floors are all screwed up. But if not, if I get the property for cheaper, I just wonder what is the best thing I could do? It's in a good location near main street and the lake beach. Anyway, all that isnt important really to this question. I was looking at the small pre-fab type houses also and papercrete, etc...... The steel houses I really like though as they can be raised and are very resistant to harsh weather.

Whether you want to build a cob oven, bench, studio, or other such space...or are inspired by the ecological/community awareness, while simultaneously creating a tangible product you should check this out. If anyone is interested either personally or professionally in such a workshop you should look into www.SGNB.com (thats for Seven Generations Natural Builders).
Instructor:
Sasha Rabin (sasha@sgnb.com)
Sasha Rabin has a degree in Ecological Design from Evergreen State College. She has studied natural and traditional methods of building in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Indonesia, and the southwest United States. Following an apprentice at the Cob Cottage Company she worked with them as an assistant instructor(2001) and went on to co-found Seven Genereation Natural Builders in 2003. She built a cob dwelling in the southwest US that she is curently living in. She contuinues to teach with SGNB, as well teaching as a guest instructor at the Real Good Institute for Solar Living(www.realgoods.com) / and Yestermorrow Design/Build School.

Hi y'all.

It's been a while since I spent much time online, but for a good reason. I've been hard at work on my design for an extremely high efficiency earth bermed passive solar dome home using renewable and recycled materials, and the best in alternative energy concepts.

My architects are extremely enthusiastic about the design and what it means to the future of sustainable home design.

One tough part has been in trying to dodge the frequent problem of finding certain materials without having to go into the expensive and wasteful custom designed item situation.

One part of this is that I want to use recycled glass in very thick slabs as a nice thermal storage medium as part of several high mass walls, but which will allow light through to various extents and produce pleasant lighting effects which further enhance the enjoyment of the living areas. Functionally it will be similar to glass block walls and design elements as we see in so many structures lately, but will have the added advantage of high mass for thermal storage and it being from a recycled source.

So the question is, does anyone know a good source for these, preferably in the Ohio region, or am I going to have to go to a local glass resmelting facility and have them make these as a custom item? I'd really like to find them in some standard sizes such as 4'x8'x1', and yes I know they will need special handling due to extreme weight.

Thoughts anyone?

Our models are Eco-Village at Ithaca (http://www.ecovillage.ithaca.ny.us/), Champlain Valley Co-Housing (http://www.champlainvalleycohousing.org), the Wasatch Commons (http://www.econ.utah.edu/~ehrbar/coho/index.htm), and Earthsong Eco-Neighborhood (http://www.earthsong.org.nz), suitably modified to local conditions.
www.worldchanging.com/archives//006428.html

Michael Rakowitz traveled to Jordan in the mid-90s on a study program where he focused in part on the nomadic tradition of the Bedouins, and the architecture of their tents. When he returned to Boston, where he was a student at MIT, the presence of the homeless population in the city triggered a quandary for him regarding the contrast of a nomadic lifestyle by tradition versus by necessity. The nomadic patterns of the urban homeless, particularly in the cold months, were dictated by the location of heating vents releasing exhaust from HVAC systems inside houses and buildings. Many of these systems had been designed like boxes, such that a person could sleep on top of the vent and stay warm; but viewing this as a problem, the city had begun installing vertical vents which slanted downward off the building, making it impossible to rest on them.

When Rakowitz spotted a man standing beneath one of these vents catching some heat on top of his head, an idea struck him, and so began a decade of public, participatory intervention. Rakowitz would find a way to transfer the waste heat and contain it in a small, collapsible shelter which would inflate upon attachment to the blowing vent.

Apparently, in 1906 an immigrant began digging here in Fresno, and over a period of years, dug out a 20 acre area where he eventually built his home and grew his own food until he died. You can read more about the gardens in this LA Times article...

so i thought I would share an idea I have tossed around for along time
that is seeming like a good one the more angles I come at it from.

I am interested in the idea of buying and inhabiting former industrial property--
I had this idea when was very young while riding by an former brick/masonry plant.
growing up in a rural area on the outskirts of a small city, there were numerous old
industrial locations ranging from 1 small building to several acres of buildings.
such layouts are often seen as somewhat burdensome especially when the places
were designed for very specific work and are therefore often very cheap.
in almost every case, the places I remember locally that were bought were leveled
to make room for something completely different.
also, in almost every case, properties consisting of a metal frame and skin building were accompanied
by a small masonry building for offices.

the benefits I can think of..

1-cheap
2-recycled
3-lots of room
4-workshop, studio, and garage space
5-nearly always fenced in (good for me)
6-usually lots of materials to be recycled from unwanted structures
7-pre-existing water, sewer and power service.
8-often somewhat remote and less likely to attract alot of attention from neighbors.
this one seems especially important considering the vast majority of code violation
calls come from disgruntled, uppity neighbors in areas they feel like they are protecting.
9- often built from masory and metal. although I love the natural organic look of wood
(and grew up in a log cabin) It seems almost illogical to build with something flamable.

possible downfalls
1- dwelling codes (always : (
2-lots of cleanup
others depending on the nature of the former industry.

also... out of curiosity..
has anyone heard of work boats being converted to houseboats?
are there codes for living on a boat?
any links or stories?

any input you might have would be of interest.

thanks!

Hi Tribe,
I have been asked to help produce a 9 day natural building/permaculture event on a new piece of land just south of the Baja border.
I am looking for feedback on all aspects including value, interest and curriculum.
please respond to scottankenypdx@gmail.com
Here are the details...

Oct 27 – Nov 4

Imagine a revolutionary oasis built with your very own hands
as you exercise in natural building and whole system design principles.

Imagine a community of passionate people learning what it means to be human beings,
immersed in an environment of self-expression, of listening, and of appreciation,
while they build beautifully and sustainably.

Introducing GiraSol (Sunflower), a new permaculture settlement breaking ground in November 2007. We invite you to be a part of this amazing experience by participating in a nine-day course designed to bring you competency in Permaculture and Earthen Building Methods.

Imagine yourself as part of that community…Living. Building. Playing.

This nine-day intensive design/build studio will combine natural building techniques (cobb, adobe, stone, straw/clay, passive/active heating systems) with presentations, discussions, exercises, and fun field trips.

GiraSol’s ground-breaking workshop will provide training in regenerative village design, natural construction and permaculture theory while establishing the GiraSol information center through hands-on work. The design will integrate a century-old adobe structure into a whimsical new building, seemingly sprung from the canvas of a Maxfield Parrish painting.

Led by mOceaN (Mark Lakeman), Lydia Doleman and Martin Shulke of Portland’s City Repair Project, the GiraSol Intensive will take place from 10/27/07 to 11/04/07. We will be camping as a group in the beautiful Baja desert, and all meals will be provided.

Basics

Location: GiraSol is a 200-acre parcel situated in Valle de las Palmas (Valley of the Palms), about 20 miles south of the U.S./Mexico Border and 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean between the major cities of Tijuana, Ensenada & Tecate. This new Center is on a vast tract of beautiful land in the valley, along a road from Ensenada to Tecate which is currently under construction. This road will bring unprecedented real estate development to this relatively undisturbed agrarian area. GiraSol strives to be a jewel in the Baja landscape by providing an example of sustainable community design.

Course Description: You will receive training AND become competent in the following areas:

1. regenerative village design and earthen building methods
2. biomass accumulation and use, plastering
3. roof framing
4. integrated landscaping
5. water catchment, re-use, and finishing methods.

Construction will be accompanied by discussions of the ecological features and benefits of each building phase. Through two field trips we will explore the local community by travelling to a wildlife preserve and taking part in Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Daily Activities

6 a.m.
7 a.m.
Curriculum

I'm in need of feedback and advise from the "pro's" ( and you are a "pro" )
What may I do that will increase the thermal performance a factor of ten which will not destroy the existing construction?

I'll be stripping the siding and roofing to expose the 2 cm / 3/4" sheathing and excavating the foundation to the footing and out around 1.5 m. / 4' .

I know a complete vapor barrier is needed and I'm concerned about mold and rot.

The wall cavities are currently insulated with 9 cm / 3 1/2" fiberglass

I've been thinking a lot about the possibility of having a positive pressure ventilation in the basement and a negative in house, balanced so the negative pressure in the house is great enough to keep vapor from entering the wall cavities.

Also thinking of a rigid 1" mineral wool "buffer" zone between the sheathing and vapor barrier that would allow "breathing" if the whole house is ventilated in a positive pressure.

Yup - - - I bit off a CHUNK ! ! ! and I really want and intend to do it right.

Hopefully by this time next year there will be accomplishments to talk about.

I should take this message and post it in a "green retrofit" tribe.

I've tried to post a this before, but for some reason, it didn't registrar and folks couldn't read what I had written. So, I'm going to attempt to write it out again and hopefully this time, we'll have more responses,

Ok, so...a little info and background. I'm in Israel, and working on a project out here to grow herbs for the community. Also, wanting very much to have a program available for kids and their parents to learn about plants and how they communicate with us on all levels. It's really something that isn't being done here and I would like to bring this opportunity to light. I need some help. That's way i'm writing this request. We have a few green houses, so climate is not an issue. We need seeds! All different kinds, but organic. Herbs and winter vegetables.

The list for herbs:Elder flowers ,Yarrow ,Sage ,Rose hips ,Echinacea,Mullein,Astragalus,
Poke Root,Elecampane ,Thyme.

We are asking for 30 seeds each be sent to Israel.
We are asking for donations, since this project can really use all the help it can get and we really don't have the funds to get these seeds. Also, we request that the seeds are from your own garden and collected by you. It's a beautifal thing to know that the seeds that we are receiving are from people who cared for these plants and havested the seeds themselves. There is a story there and it makes it interesting to explain where these seeds came from and who cared for them. We like telling it this way.

Our request for organic Veggie seeds:
Celery ,Chinese leaves ,Dark greens ,Leeks ,Mushrooms, Squashes ,Winter roots ,Winter salads.

If it's not too much trouble to send the seeds with labels so we know what is what.

If you have any questions please feel to send me a message.
Thanks so much for helping us with this project. I mean a lot to us and the many people who's lives will be changed by your seeds.

If you are interested, please let me know and I can give out the address of where to send the seeds.

Yikes - I got an email yesterday reminding me that the Natural Building Colloquium East is only a month away. And the discount registration rate cutoff is pretty much here right now.

The event's webpage, including the presenter list, has been updated - see
http://www.peaceweavers.com/bws/
I'm still stoked about Jim Merkel being there (scuttlebutt is that he can only be there for the first couple days, so plan accordingly)... and along with some others, Frank Meyer has been added! Much too cool.

It also seems that musician Kathy Moser, who comes every year, has set up a sponsorship program to help deserving teens without means to attend. I hear that a couple kids from the Rosebud reservation might be able to learn about materials and techniques that they can bring back to their communities because of her. That's the kind of spirit behind this thing... that's why I keep going back. Kathy's site has some more info about the sponsorship program, and what moves her about natural building.
http://www.kathymoser.com/
The Peaceweavers can accept tax-deductible donations if anyone else wants to get in on this kind of help.

The latest email from the Peaceweavers said:

"Concerned about how your lifestyle impacts our Earth? The Colloquium, an annual event hosted by the PeaceWeavers, focuses on low-impact, high-quality green solutions that meet the highest levels of comfort, health, and safety. It brings together a diverse community of people to share information and forge unity among people who desire a more wholesome and sustainable built environment."

"The community setting provides a unique format for participants to live and work alongside the experts and to gain new skills through direct experience. Workshops and presentations include topics such as strawbale, cob, and cordwood construction, earthen plasters, living roofs, renewable energy, permaculture, composting toilets, alternative fuels, and sourcing food locally."

>>How much green can you go (or rake in)
>>$400.00 is a lot of cash for a weekend, especially for people on a
>>limited budget.the mid atlantic renewable energy fair is less than
>>$20 bucks a day.
>>Ain't mothing cheap about that offer.
>
>	They're different animals.
>
>	Looking at the renewable energy festival's 2006 schedule, I see
>that there was a one-hour presentation on green building basics; one
>on LEED; and one on Energy Star. There's clearly tons of great
>sessions, but I don't see anything offering long days of hands-on
>natural-building experience led by experienced practitioners, which is
>the main emphasis of the colloquium. Learning the techniques and
>properties of non-manufactured materials by working side-by-side
>with experienced people is a totally different kind of information than
>comes from books, websites, or sit-and-watch presentations.
>Whether it's money well spent in the end really depends on the
>individual and the choices they make.
>
>	The colloquium schedule (it's Tuesday through Sunday, BTW,
>not just a weekend) runs from dawn to well after dark. Food and
>camping are included, and it isn't subsidized by rows of
>manufacturer and reseller booths ($250 and $155 respectively for
>the energy fair - for which there are 108 booth spaces available, or
>almost $22,000 using an average price of $202.50) or paid
>sponsorships ($50 to $2500 to the festival organizers - there
>appears to have been something over $10,000 from sponsors
>last year). I'm not saying that kind of subsidizing is a bad thing for
>the attendees - it's just not what the colloquium does (though they'd
>probably be willing to consider propositions). There are also fewer
>participants at the colloquium, making it a more intimate event -
>and meaning that it costs more per person than the energy festival
>does.
>
>	When I lived in Minnesota a decade ago, I'd go to the Midwest
>Renewable Energy Association's annual fair in Wisconsin - it was
>a tremendous event every time. The one in PA seems quite
>similar, and I'm sure it's excellent.
>
>	For a better understanding of the different flavors of the two
>events, compare photos from last year's energy festival -
>http://www.paenergyfest.com/energy06/photos/photo1.html
>	with photos from the past three years of the colloquium -
>http://www.potkettleblack.com/natbild/building-with-spirit/
>
>
>	I hope this is helpful.
>> Natural Building and Sustainable Living Colloquium
>> hosted by The PeaceWeavers :: Thunder Mountain Bath, New York
>> http://www.peaceweavers.com/bws/

>From natural building and permaculture techniques to water and
>energy conservation... from alternative fuels to sourcing your food
>locally... this event is important for everyone concerned about how
>their lifestyle impacts our Earth.
>
>It's the fourth year that the PeaceWeavers have hosted this family-
>friendly event at the Thunder Mountain Retreat Center near Bath,
>New York, offering very full days of teaching, learning, building,
>and networking. Top experts, authors, educators, innovators,
>designers, and builders offer hands-on experience and
>educational presentations with close-to-the-earth building
>materials and lifestyle choices.
>
>But in the end, there's one really important thing that makes
>these events amazing. Sure, there's all kinds of new, fun,
>valuable things to learn tactile, hands-in-the-mud stuff that you just
>don't get from the books or the internet. Sure, people can pick up
>tricks and tips to save precious days and months of misdirected
>time and effort, as well as thousands of dollars of misspent
>money, on their own projects and in their lives. Sure, there's the
>great food, the beautiful natural setting, the music, and so much
>more. But in the end, the most rewarding and inspiring thing is the
>rare privilege of being with so many talented, smart, caring, willing,
>extraordinary people... some of whom just happen to be world-class
>natural builders, sustainable thinkers, and do-gooders. It's the
>people - all of them who come together at Thunder Mountain that
>are the best thing of all.
>
>Join us for our 4th Natural Building Colloquium! - a hands-on
>event with an emphasis on natural building and sustainable living
>in the northeastern climate. Meet and be inspired by some of the
>movement's foremost natural builders, designers, and sustainable
>living educators.
>
>Workshops, demonstrations, and presentations include such topics
>as: Strawbale · cob · cordwood · timber framing · earth sheltered
>buildings · straw-clay infill · permaculture · community-supported
>agriculture · living roofs · thatching · renewable energy (wind, solar,
>and more) · natural plasters & finishes · building with hemp ·
>alternative fuels · log cabin construction · international building
>projects · building codes · and much more...

Does anyone know of any resources (Plans, Sites, used Silo stores...) that might be helpful? This is a fairly modest project, and I am looking to do as much of the construction as I can manage.

Hey, names matty. Built a yurt and decided I am going to build a yome this summer. Id like to do it myself before ordering thepieces across the country. I am wondering what kinds of ideas people have around connecting all the wooden rounds 11/2 inches to 2 1/2 rounds. to one another.

This jist of it is. You have two 8 7 foot triangles. Equilateral triangles. So at each lower connection, two of the lower base poles meet(they are the ones that rest on the ground. Then at that one intersection, two more poles on opposite angles meet as well from the top. So essentially I am working on inventing a four way hub that will attach them all.

Next is, the top hub where the triangles come to a point(five way hub). SO the jist of this one is at each intersection thier is two angled poles which make the top of the triangle, then two across the top that meet at the two angled points then one roof pole that comes in on another angle from the roof. So its essentially a pentagram shape.

What I know so far, is thta eye screws have been used, how i am unsure yet.

I also thought about creating plywood pentagram cuts that I could cut so tha all the poles would meet it and then put nice sized screws into the ends of the poles and screw them in. I have also thought jsut about using straping. Or welding moulds. I am wondering about other idea's or maybe flaws you can see that i cant.

I am very new to this and just learning abotu design and structure. Would appreciate any suggestions one might havfe. ALso if you need clarity around my rather obscure way of exsplaining those intersections or hubs lemme know.

thanks
<
