  He is 'living' the best of both worlds. I of course see his point would also like to point out that he comes back to the states every # MONTHS, which is not that big of a time gap if you think about it. And he is still getting paid well as he is writing for the NY times and his kids are no longer living with him.
  
  
  I dont need to go all the way to Japan to figure out the there is a balance that can be gotten by living simply where you are.
