I'm working on a Yome (Yurt/Dome) design and I was hoping to use either Vinyl Coated or Laminated Polyester tarps as roofing material.
1.) What's the difference between Coated and Laminated?
2.) Is there any off-gassing or other issues I should be warned about before living directly under this type material?
Thanks in Advance,
boarhead

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 9:13 AMIve had nothing but trouble with tarps every time i have used them to cover one thing or another. The best tarps i ever used are the kind used by truckers to cover lumber etc. on the flatbeds. A truck stop or truck supply place will be your best bet on finding them. They are the longest lasting tarps ive ever found. -

Thu, February 19, 2009 - 9:18 AMI definately agree, with Wes.
Id also like to add that if you go down to a pool supply place and get a solar pool cover they make great roofing and add nice warmth in the winter! -

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 9:33 AMI think you have a better idea than i do House of Hedon. In fact i was never a fan of tarps because even the trucker tarps whithered away and that usually took 5 years of being in the weather. They dont last a year when being used on trucks due to all the tugging and tearing that happens.
If you use tarps and are still unhappy with them, then go for some heavyweight canvas, and you will have to spray it with a waterproofing agent but if the pool tarp doesnt work i would give canvas a try.
If its something you intend to leave up forever, it might be best to use 2x4s and make your own frame and trusses for the roof. -

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 9:41 AMyeah, I have a giant tarp over my yurt and winter greenhouse that has been up for years. They are meant to lay in the sun for long periods and are VERY slow to break down. -

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 7:10 PMSince the tarp will be utilized in Central America (Belize, El Salvador or Costa Rica), it will be subjected to considerable moisture and intensive UV... so cotton is out of the question. I will be utilizing bamboo instead on any dimensional lumber (2x4s).
A picture of the flat roof layout (when the slit is overlapped, it creates a conical form, for a Yurt) is found here:
www.firewaterventures.com/image...rp.jpg
The size of the floor space the tarp creates depends on how much the slit is overlapped (which determines the roof pitch) and the dimension of the circle (or hexadecagon to be precise).

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Sun, February 22, 2009 - 2:21 PMConsider the Billboard Vinyl.
Used.
Generally free.
From large advertising billboard companies, like (evil! evil!) Clear Channel.
You'd want to get in touch with the yard boss and ask him if during his next yard purge of obsolete billboard vinyls, if you can swing by in your truck (and yes, it HAS to be a truck! these things can get heavy!) and get a Jumbo billboard vinyl?
(Jumbos' generally run 20' x 60' or so and weigh several hundred pounds.)
Bring him a case of beer for his workers, for when the day is over. Makes him popular and costs you almost nothing.
btw: Billboard vinyls have synthetic fibers running through the vinyl and are thicker than some pond liners I've seen, and they've usually finished off-gassing by the time their ad campaign has run out.
I love them and wish I could get more. -

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 9:49 PMSome cute lil' thang decided to ask the yard boys to UNROLL the vinyls so she 'could find a pretty one'.
and they DID.
Stopped all work in the yard so she could 'shop' vinyls.
**shaking head**
The office saw and shut the doors tight.
Vanity ruined it for everyone.

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Fri, July 10, 2009 - 10:49 PMIf you haven't already taken a look at it, I would suggest tyvek.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyvek
It is almost as light as paper, extremely tear resistant, won't break down under UV, and it's totally waterproof. Ultralight backpackers swear by this stuff.
Best of all you can pick it up at HD or Lowes for pretty damned cheap. If memory serves you can get a roll (4' x 50') for something like $120.

Sat, July 11, 2009 - 12:09 PMHave you checked out billboard vinyl? It is the cheapest and best tarp available. Sun resistance is great.

Re: Vinyl tarps - usable?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 7:40 AMMight be the same as billboard vinyl, but when i was in the signage industry we used a material called flexface. was a vinyl impregnated mesh material used for outdoor signage. PVC is durable as it gets. as for offgassing, of course. plastic will do this for a term and then come close to stabilizing. used materials could theoretically be more stable? -
